Chargers Draft Recap
The 2021 NFL Draft officially ended on May 1st, 2021. Many experts have praised the Los Angeles Chargers for their nine Draft selections due to the fact that the Chargers filled positions of need without trading up. The Bolts selected the following:
Round 1, Pick 13 — T — Rashawn Slater
Round 2, Pick 47 — CB -Asante Samuel Jr
Round 3, Pick 77- WR- Josh Palmer
Round 3, Pick 97- TE- Tre McKitty
Round 4, Pick 118- EDGE — Chris Rumph
Round 5, Pick 159- T- Brendan James
Round 6, Pick 185- LB- Nick Neiman
Round 6, Pick 198- RB - Larry Roundtree
Round 7, Pick 241- S- Mark Webb
After free agency and the draft, the Chargers have revamped their offensive line by adding Corey Linsley the best Center in football and Matt Feiler an above average Guard. Experts argued that Slater has more potential than Oregon tackle Penei Sewell. Slater is going to block Herbert’s blind side for the next 4 years. Getting a top tackle prospect at 13 overall is great value. The Chargers also grabbed Asante Samuel Jr, a first round talent who fell to the second round due to size concerns. Samuel Jr will join Derwin James and Michael Davis in the secondary. This also fills a position of need after Casey Hayward was cut earlier in the offseason.
Josh Palmer and Tre McKitty were head scratchers in the 3rd round. Many draft pundits claimed that there was better talent available at WR and TE. Palmer is most likely going to replace Mike Williams who is expected to leave next year. McKitty is replacing Hunter Henry, who joined the Patriots in free agency.
The Chargers also gathered depth and great special teams players with their day 3 picks (4th - 7th rounds).
Post Draft
Even though the Chargers filled up positions of needs, there are still a couple of holes in the roster, more specifically on the defensive side of the ball. There is not a lot of depth behind Nasir Adderley and Derwin James in the Safety position, and besides Asante Samuel Jr, Michael Davis and Chris Harris Jr, the CB room is quite small.
They say that your team is as good as its bench, and if the Chargers want to hoist the Lombardi trophy, they should find serviceable depth pieces.
